10-year-olds HK pass UK high school exams

HONG KONG (AFP) – Two Hong Kong 10-year-olds reared on a punishing schedule of study and swimming have sailed through British high school exams, fuelling debate over the "Tiger Mother" approach to parenting.

Twins Estephe and Perrine Corlin scored straight "As" in the maths papers of the International General Certificate of Secondary Education exams, which are normally taken by 16-year-olds.

The boy and girl's Malaysian-born mother Rosalind Corlin said their achievement was down to a gruelling schedule tailor-made for success -- echoing Amy Chua, the Chinese-American author of "Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother".

The Yale University law professor has sparked worldwide debate with her book extolling the benefits of no-nonsense parenting over the more relaxed style of child-rearing common in the West.

Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook Fan Page Hacke

Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook fan page seems to have been hacked, with the hacker posting a message calling on the company to transform into a "social business."

The message, seemingly posted on Facebook from Mark Zuckerberg's account, was quickly removed (together with the fan page), but not quickly enough to go by unnoticed, receiving more than 1,800 "likes" and hundreds of comments in the process.

The message read: "Let the hacking begin: If facebook needs money, instead of going to the banks, why doesn't Facebook let its users invest in Facebook in a social way? Why not transform Facebook into a 'social business' the way Nobel Prize winner Muhammad Yunus described it? [LINK] What do you think? #hackercup2011"

Facebook made no statement about the incident, but if Zuckerberg's fan page was indeed hacked, it's a big deal. If the Facebook CEO (more accurately, the PR team that's handling the page for him) can't keep his Facebook account safe from intruders, who can?

SAN FRANCISCO – Google Inc. plans to hire more than 6,200 workers this year — boosting its work force by at least a quarter — in the biggest expansion yet by the Internet's most profitable company.

The hiring spree comes as President Barack Obama emphasized the need for more jobs during his State of the Union address Tuesday night. Google CEO Eric Schmidt was among a group of business leaders who met with Obama last month to discuss ways to bolster the economy.

But Google's push to further expand its work force, which grew by 23 percent last year, may not be well received on Wall Street. The Internet search leader's spending has annoyed some investors who prefer a more frugal approach in hopes of fatter returns.

Malaysia New lab mosquitoes to fight dengue

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – Malaysia released about 6,000 genetically modified mosquitoes into a forest in the first experiment of its kind in Asia aimed at curbing dengue fever, officials said Wednesday.

The field test is meant to pave the way for the use of genetically engineered Aedes aegypti male mosquitoes to mate with females and produce no offspring or ones with shorter lives, thus curtailing the mosquitopopulation. Only female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes spread dengue fever, which killed 134 people in Malaysia last year.

Jimmy Buffett falls off stage at Australia concert

SYDNEY – Singer Jimmy Buffett fell off a stage at the end of a concert in Sydney and was rushed to the hospital.

Australia's Daily Telegraph reports that audience members saw the 64-year-old fall face first off the stage and hit his head.

Buffett's manager then took the stage and urged fans to leave the auditorium, the Hordem Pavillion.

The singer was brought to Sydney's St. Vincent's Hospital.

Wednesday night's concert was Buffett's fifth and last in Sydney on his current tour.

Pelajar Hilang`dibunuh kejam

Seorang remaja yang dilaporkan hilang oleh keluarganya pada Sabtu lalu ditemui mati dibunuh secara kejam hari ini. Mayatnya ditanam dalam tanah sedalam kira-kira 0.5 meter di belakang rumah salah seorang suspek di Kampung Sadong Jaya dekat sini, hari ini. Mangsa, Taufik Abdul Rahim, 15, seorang pelajar tingkatan tiga di Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Semera meninggal dunia selepas dipercayai dipukul di kepala dengan sebatang kayu oleh sekumpulan enam lelaki. Ketua Polis Daerah Kota Samarahan, Deputi Supritendan Abdul Rahman Ahmad berkata, sebelum penemuan mayat remaja itu, bapanya yang berusia 42 tahun membuat laporan di Balai Polis Asajaya mengenai kehilangan anaknya pada pukul 1.30 petang semalam.

Seramai 35 penuntut Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Arau termasuk dua pelajar politeknik cedera apabila bas yang mereka naiki terbabas ke dalam longkang di Kilometer 334.1, Lebuhraya Utara Selatan, dekat sini, awal pagi semalam. Ketua Polis Daerah Tapah, Superintendan Roslan Bek Ahmad, berkata enam pelajar cedera yang memerlukan rawatan susulan, manakala 29 yang lain hanya calar di tangan. Katanya, semua mereka hanya dirawat sebagai pesakit luar dan dibenarkan pulang selepas menerima rawatan di Hospital Tapah (HT). “Bas yang disewa khas oleh penuntut terbabit menggunakan dua pemandu bas dan hasil pemeriksaan pemandunya memiliki lesen memandu sah. Kejadian itu tidak membabitkan kenderaan lain dan polis masih menyiasat punca kejadian. “Rombongan berkenaan difahamkan adalah anjuran penuntut dan tidak ada kena mengena dengan pihak UiTM," katanya di sini, semalam. Roslan berkata, bas itu membawa 35 penumpang iaitu 31 pelajar wanita dan seorang pelajar lelaki UiTM Arau; seorang pelajar wanita Politeknik Jitra, Kedah; seorang pelajar Politeknik Kangar, Perlis serta seorang lelaki penumpang awam. Sementara itu, seorang mangsa yang cedera, Aliza Fazni, 19, berkata dia terjaga daripada tidur selepas dia terhempas ke kerusi menyebabkan tangan kanannya terseliuh. "Apabila terjaga, saya dapati bas nyaris terbalik dan penumpang sedang keluar daripada bas. Mayat pramugari MAS dibawa pulang esok

KUALA LUMPUR: Mayat pramugari Penerbangan Malaysia (MAS), Chin Swee Len, yang ditemui di tempat letak kereta hotel penginapannya di Amsterdam, akan dibawa pulang ke tanah air esok dengan pesawat MAS. Jurucakap Wisma Putra berkata, mayat mendiang dijadual tiba di Lapangan Terbang Antarabangsa Kuala Lumpur (KLIA) kira-kira 7 pagi Rabu. "Kami tidak boleh memberikan sebarang komen lain buat masa ini bagi menghormati permintaan keluarga mangsa yang tidak mahu diganggu pihak media," katanya. Duta Besar Malaysia ke Belanda, Datuk Dr Fauziah Mohd Taib, pula berkata polis negara itu menyerahkan mayat Chin, 34, kepada suami mendiang dan abangnya untuk dibawa pulang setelah siasatan kes itu selesai. Beliau berkata, keputusan bedah siasat menunjukkan tidak ada unsur jenayah dalam kes kematian mangsa. "Punca kematian mangsa ialah akibat kecederaan parah akibat jatuh dari tempat tinggi. Ia adalah satu kes yang jelas, namun polis Amsterdam tidak menyatakan sama ada ia kes bunuh diri atau suatu kemalangan. "Justeru, kematian mangsa tidak ada pembabitan pihak lain serta tidak wujud unsur jenayah," katanya ketika dihubungi. Sementara itu, Ketua Jabatan Siasatan Jenayah Bukit Aman, Datuk Seri Mohd Bakri Zinin, berkata pihaknya sedang menunggu maklum balas daripada polis Amsterdam berhubung kes berkenaan dan bersedia membantu pihak berkuasa negara itu jika diminta. Dalam kejadian Jumaat lalu, Chin yang berasal dari Taman Oakland, Seremban, ditemui mati di tempat letak kereta hotel penginapannya di Amsterdam oleh pelanggan hotel pada 9 pagi. KUCHING 15 Jan. - Majlis perkahwinan Ketua Menteri Sarawak, Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud dengan Puan Sri Ragad Waleed Alkurdi berlangsung dalam suasana meriah di Petra Jaya, malam ini.

Bertempat di Kompleks Dewan Undangan Negeri (DUN) yang baru, majlis bermula pukul 9.15 malam apabila kedua-dua mempelai diiringi masuk ke dewan persandingan bersama tetamu kehormat.

Meskipun diadakan secara tertutup, majlis berkonsepkan perkahwinan ala Inggeris yang mendapat sentuhan perunding terkenal, Datuk Raja Rezza Shah itu dihadiri 460 tetamu dari dalam dan luar negara.

WASHINGTON – Back at the dawn of the dinosaur era, a quick-moving predator set the stage for the famous and fearsome giants that followed in its footsteps, according to new research. "It was a little dinosaur, but it carried a big evolutionary stick," said Paul C. Sereno of the University of Chicago, a leader of the team that discovered Eodromaeus.
The 4-foot-long hunter lived 230 million years ago in what is now South America and appears to be the ancestor of such creatures as Tyrannosaurus rex.
"It is stunning," Sereno said of the find, reported in Friday's edition of the journal Science.
Its features, such as a balancing tail and air pockets in the skull, show it was closely related to T. rex, he said.
But while it stood on two feet like T. rex, Eodromaeus (pronounced eyo-DRO-may-us) was a lightweight at just 10- to 15-pounds.
"This is a very exciting find indeed," said Oliver W. M. Rauhut, a curator at the Bavarian State Collection for Palaeontology and Geology in Munich, Germany.
"The origin and early diversification of dinosaurs is still poorly understood," said Rauhut, who was not on the research team.
Nick Longrich of the department of geology and geophysics at Yale University agreed: "It's very significant, because it helps give us a better idea of what the ancestor of carnivorous dinosaurs — including Tyrannosaurus, Allosaurus and the birds — would have looked like."
"A new species of early dinosaur is always an exciting find, especially when the specimens are so complete, like Eodromaeus," added Randall B. Irmis, a professor of geology and geophysics at the University of Utah.

Youth wins as Nebraskan takes Miss America crown

LAS VEGAS – A 17-year-old Nebraskan too young to cast a ballot has captured enough votes to win the Miss America crown, kickstarting her hopes of going to law school and eventually becoming a politician.
"I want to be there making sure that I stand up for what's right, stand up for integrity and honesty," Teresa Scanlan told The Associated Press on Saturday night after becoming the first Miss America from the Cornhusker State.
She won a $50,000 scholarship and a year's reign in one of the most visible positions any young woman could seek.
Scanlan captured the hearts of seven judges after a night of playing the piano, walking across a Las Vegas stage in a white gown and black bikini, and saying security trumps the public's right to knowledge when it comes to government leaks.
She said she'll register to vote as an independent after turning 18 next month, and work toward her goals by going to law school and perhaps becoming a prosecutor, then judge.
"At this point, attorneys and politicians are looked down on and have terrible reputations for being greedy and power hungry and I really think it's important for people who have their heart and mind in the right place get into those powerful positions," Scanlan told the AP.
"When I talk to kids my age, I don't find very many who are interested in that, because many are just turned off to the idea," she said. "I think it's important that we get a lot more of my generation willing to step up and go into those positions."
Scanlan beat out 52 beauty queens from other U.S. states, plus Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and the District of Columbia. She said she was a bit worried after a preliminary interview with judges and hoped they would think a 17-year-old could do the job.

Smoking causes gene damage in minutes

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Those first few puffs on a cigarette can within minutes cause genetic damage linked to cancer, US scientists said in a study released.
In fact, researchers said the "effect is so fast that it's equivalent to injecting the substance directly into the bloodstream," in findings described as a "stark warning" to those who smoke.
The study is the first on humans to track how substances in tobacco cause DNA damage, and appears in the peer-reviewed journal Chemical Research in Toxicology, issued by the American Chemical Society.
Using 12 volunteer smokers, scientists tracked pollutants called PAHs, or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, that are carried in tobacco smoke and can also be found in coal-burning plants and in charred barbecue food.
They followed one particular type -- phenanthrene, which is found in cigarette smoke -- through the blood and saw it form a toxic substance that is known to "trash DNA, causing mutations that can cause cancer," the study said.
"The smokers developed maximum levels of the substance in a time frame that surprised even the researchers: just 15-30 minutes after the volunteers finished smoking," the study said.
"These results are significant because PAH diol epoxides react readily with DNA, induce mutations, and are considered to be ultimate carcinogens of multiple PAH in cigarette smoke," the study said.
Lead scientist Stephen Hecht said the study is unique because it examines the effects of inhaling cigarette smoke, without interference from other sources of harm such as pollution or a poor diet.
"The results reported here should serve as a stark warning to those who are considering starting to smoke cigarettes," Hecht said.
Lung cancer kills about 3,000 people around the world each day, and 90 percent of those deaths are attributable to cigarette smoking.
The research was funded by the National Cancer Institute.

More male turtles needed

GEORGE TOWN: Penang is trying to hatch more male turtles to mate with females so that the reptiles will not disappear from the island’s coastlines.

The Pantai Kerachut Turtle Conservation Sanctuary is working to maintain a breeding ratio of 70 females to 30 males under a programme which began three years ago.

Department licensing and resource protection officer Mansor Yobe said they needed to have more male turtles for the females which come to shore to lay their eggs eight times a year.


Gender check: An Olive Ridley turtle that was found trapped in a fishing net recently being examined by Mansor at the Pantai Kerachut Turtle Sanctuary in Penang.
“If we don’t do this, there may not be any turtles left here in future,” he said at the sanctuary at the north-west tip of Penang island.

Besides Green Turtles, the Olive Ridley Turtles are also known to lay their eggs at Pantai Kerachut, Pantai Teluk Kampi, Pantai Teluk Ailing and Pantai Teluk Ketapang on the island’s north-west coast.

Mansor said records from 2000 until 2006 showed that close to 100% of all hatchlings at the sanctuary were females.

He said they then started testing various sites by burying the eggs in shaded spots under trees or in cooler areas to try to get more male turtles hatched.

He added that a shaded hatchery was built at a cost of RM16,500 in 2009 to help determine the gender of the turtles.

“After collecting the eggs from several sites, we placed them in the shaded hatchery where the temperature is about 28.2 degrees Celsius.

“Eggs buried in the sand outside the shaded hatchery will produce females as the temperature there is hotter at 30 degrees Celsius,” he said.

He said eggs at the sanctuary were hatched on the beach rather than in a temperature-controlled incubator because research has shown this produced healthier hatchlings.

He said last year, some 5,000 eggs were collected and 70% were successfully hatched.

“We hope to collect the same number this year,” he said, adding that the peak period for turtles to lay eggs is between December and August.

Naruto Chapter 523 is scheduled to be released by December 30 or 31. So while waiting, lets discuss some of the spoilers you’ve heard for Naruto Chapter 523.
